What is so special about the table of 9 that everyone keep coming up with new and smarter tricks to write down the table in seconds? I mean, do we really need to create this huge buzz around such a tiny section within the world of mathematics.
Well, in one word – Yes! Reason?
The only reason is pattern. Human being are probably most curious species on this planet atleast (have no idea about other planets and galaxies). The multiplication table of 9 can be written down in countably large number of ways by following different pattern each time. One of those patterns is what I’m going to show you in this post. This should be called – The Folded Finger Method. Atleast this is what I call it. Anyways. Let’s move on to actual stuff.
Folded Finger Method
Let’s start with an example to see how this method works. Suppose you want to find out the value of 9 x 4. In this case, the folded finger method states that :
- Keep both your hands side by side.
- Starting from the left most finger of left hand, fold the 4th finger.
- However many unfolded fingers towards the left of folded finger are, that will become the first digit of our answer, in our case 3.
- However many unfolded fingers towards the right of folded finger are, that will become the second digit of our answer, in our case 6.
And boom, your answer is 36.
To prove this method works for all other numbers, take one more example, let’s say 9 x 6. Then in this case, we fold the 6th finger from left, and that is the left most finger of right hand. After folding, 5 fingers are left of it and 4 fingers are right of it. Hence answer is 54.
Thus using above we can write down the whole table of 9 as written below:
- 9 x 1 = 09
- 9 x 2 = 18
- 9 x 3 = 27
- 9 x 4 = 36
- 9 x 5 = 45
- 9 x 6 = 54
- 9 x 7 = 63
- 9 x 8 = 72
- 9 x 9 = 81
- 9 x 10 = 90
